Go on, admit it, that's what you thought when you heard the news today about divorce settlements. Particularly the Miller case - I think she gets about £5 million. Not bad for two years' work! Because, let’s face it, marriage is work, isn’t it? Isn’t that what all the experts say? You have to work at matrimony!
But while everyone focuses on the cash, spare a thought for the "silent victims" of divorce...the pets!
And don't think I am joking, either. Many a separation has got really nasty over the dog/s and when neither side can reach an amicable decision, who gets palmed off onto someone else? Why the dog (or cat), of course.
And if you don't believe me, just look up dogs and divorce on google and you'll see what I mean! And there is a lot of research on this subject, too.
Did you know that – after separation - although women do not particularly want items such as the television, CDs, DVDs, and toaster, they don’t want their ex-husbands to get them? Remember, hell hath no fury and all that! Men, meanwhile, tend to want the car, the laptop computer, digital camera, and CD and DVD collections.
Fifty per cent of women want the family home outright, but even more - 64% - wanted the dog or cat.
There is no mention of pets in the landmark rulings today but we know that the McFarlanes have children together. What a sorry mess it all is, with couples fighting tooth and nail to hang on to or get their hands on their assets. It’s a cliché, I know, but the only winners in all of this are the lawyers. If you’re thinking about saying I do, make sure you mean it!
